Discussion Forums

VirtualTourist has 3 Forums--yes, we know the correct term is ' Fora ' ;-). The VT Travel Forum is the premier forum. It is featured on the front page, is searchable, and is archived for your convenience. It is the place to ask questions and share travel-related info with fellow members around the world. Please make sure to read the forum guidelines before you post or reply in this forum.

The Help & Technical Forum is the place to get help on any VT issues that you can't figure out: Building Pages, Locating a Destination, etc. The Miscellaneous Forum is for Discussions that might not fit into either of the 2 other forum. Please carefully read the Forum Guidelines for each of the forum before posting in any of them.

Questions About: The Discussion Forum
  1. How Do I Post a Question?
  2. What Kinds of things can I post?
  3. Where Should I Post My Question?
  4. Why Was A Posting Deleted?
  5. I Posted a Question, But Didn't Get a Reply. Why?
  6. Why Didn't My Question Get Answered? Part II
  7. Can I Stop Getting Notices For A Forum I Posted In?

1. How Do I Post a Question?
It's easy. Just use the "Post a Question" link that you'll find at the right side at the top of the actual listings. If a location has no postings yet, you'll see a big 'Be the first to post a question' link.

2. What Kinds of things can I post?
Each of the forums is slightly different. However the following guidelines apply in all of them:
1)Please observe basic manners. 2) Do not post commercial messages or announcements of websites of any kind. 3)Do not post political or religious discussions. 4)Do not post to announce your new pages or updates to your pages. 5)Members who repeatedly infringe upon the forum guidelines will have their memberships revoked.

3. Where Should I Post My Question?
The Help/Technical and the Miscellaneous Forums are not broken down into levels. You may simply post appropriate questions in there without regard for where you place them.
For the Travel Forum, post your question at the most specific level possible (usually city level.) All questions flow up so that if you post about Los Angeles, your question will automatically appear in the Los Angeles Forum, the California Forum, the USA Forum, The North America Forum and the World Forum. There's no need to post in each forum Individually! Repeat postings will be removed.

4. Why Was A Posting Deleted?
Forum postings that do not follow the guidelines are routinely deleted by VT Staff. Common reasons why a forum might be deleted is that it is commercial in nature, offensive or rude, or irrelevant. For more information about what to post, please read the forum guidelines found at the top of every forum and on every entry field for posting.

5. I Posted a Question, But Didn't Get a Reply. Why?
While many questions get immediate replies in the VT forum, some might take a little longer. VT is global and not everyone is on at the same time so when you're asking your question about Norway from Australia...our friendly Norwegians might be sleeping. Just be a little patient, check back and you're quite likely to get some inside info soon.

6. Why Didn't My Question Get Answered? Part II
Sometimes, postings are a little vague: 'Africa, What is it like?' Will probably not get a useful response. Also please note that if you're new, you are MUCH more likely to get a response if you've provided some info about yourself, a picture, perhaps a brief welcome message on your homepage. Some people are reluctant to answer forum questions of people who might never be back to read their response.

7. Can I Stop Getting Notices For A Forum I Posted In?
Yes and No. If you post in a Forum you will be get notices about new postings. However, you can suspend the notices of all forum replies for a little while if you'd like to not be distracted by them. You can arrange all this in the 'Preferences' link of your VT Notices Console. It is important to encourage fellow members to not bother others with frivolous or off-topic postings which everyone will receive. Especially in the travel forums, posting should stick to the topic at hand.
