To find out what an icon means just hover your mouse over the icon itself. You'll get a little 'tooltips' window with a quick explanation. You must have Java enabled on your computer in order to see the tooltips.

There are Gold, Silver, and Bronze stars. These are awarded to members who are ranked in the Top 1,000 Top 5,000 and Top 10,000 respectively.

The plain smiley face indicates that the member is online.

The colored daisy smiley face means that the member is on your friends list and that you are also on theirs.

The black and white daisy smiley face indicates that you have added the member to your friends list, but they have not yet added you as well.
