    Even in the core of the old town, it is always possible to find places where few tourists go. Take a map of the city and walk towards the places were the map shows nothing that mesmerizes the tourist : no monument, no historical building. There, you will find only locals and may be a single lost tourist !

    This is a lovely "elevated" walk - in the sense that it takes you all over and around the fortified part of Dubrovnik waking along the old city walls. The walls encircle the entire town: they were built between the 8th and 16th century - and take you past some 6 forts or bastions, 3 round towers and 12 square towers and several rocky beaches. The place to start it is from Pile Gate - from there you can buy the ticket (15 kn) to access the walls. Done this? Then you can start the walking tour - anti-clockwise!

    Next morning we went to visit the citadel..2km southwards from the YH...we get a first impression last night and it looks really nice, but by day it was full of people gathered in the main entrance and once time inside it was a crowd everywhere with the exception of top streets empty of them

    Besides i guess its good to know for future travellers , you can go around for the perymeter and see the sights and outskirts but paying an interesting amount of money... i demmed overly expensive, but im sure that should be really beautifull

    Nice reference in every Croatina city we were....good spot to shot pics from locals and excellent place to muse and see the local way of life

    Areas in the South of the Old City (still within the Wall), Strosmajerova and uphill, are not crowded and there are actually people living there. Usually you have to take stairs to get there. It is a good place to take a break from the crowds. See my travelogue for several pictures.

    Space is valuable like in Manhattan :) Of course buildings had to be built close together to save space. They did not had at that time a need for wide streets, so now this is actually nice.

    Along the main Stradun and off on the left as you walk away from the City gate you see glimpses of winding staircases, hanging laundry and open windows. These lend a view of local townfolk.....so step away and up!
