Barely 44 kms (under an hour) from Somnath and you are in a place akin to Africa, Sasan Gir, Gir National Park & Sanctuary, to view the mighty Asian lion. The road is a bit patchy but the excitement of seeing the regal animal in its natural splendour, will keep you going. The entire sanctuary is over 1,400 sq. miles large. Rolling hills, natural vegetation, plenty of rivers and streams, all combine to make this place a haven for the wild animals and the different-hued birds. However, the pride of place belongs to the Asiatic lion whose number has been steadily increasing after the establishment of this sanctuary. Sasan Gir is the only place, outside Africa, where you may view this majestic beast in its native surroundings. You may take your own vehicle up to the sanctuary. However, after that, the buses of the sanctuary take you on a 30-minutes’ excursion into the park. This, by itself, is normally enough.
