This was our first flight on a bushplane, to the Khutzamateen Grizzly Bear Sactuary on a DeHavilland Beaver. Not a lot of room for people or luggage. The flight lasted about 40 minutes and the pilot had to weave his way through cloudy mountain passes - purely ...visual flying. Sometimes the trees seemed so close that you could reach out and touch them!
These are the most amazing video scenes of our trip. The mother bear and her two cubs were grazing on a small island that disappears at high tide. Suddenly, all three bears were in the water, swimming to the safety of the riverbank. The cubs swam part way and hitched a ride on mama for the rest.
Our host, Dan Wakeman told us that this is the first time he encountered this kind of activity close up. Truly a special moment for us all!
