Recently the County of Hawaii (Big Island only) has stepped up efforts to draw visitors here. Most vacationers stay on the sunny west side missing the splendor of the windward east. This is one example of why you should rent a car and set your sights away from the resorts and on real Hawaii!
During our trip to the Big Isle in September 2002, the surface flows of lava were crossing right at the end of Chain of Craters Road in HVNP. We drove down here on two consecutive mornings before dawn to experience it. This video contains some of the highlighs.
