Teasdale, is the Greater Yellowstone Raptor Experience's education bird. Teasdale is a non-releasable Great Horned Owl, who was found on New Year's Eve in 2010 by a man and his dog hiking near Teasdale, Utah. He had suffered fractures to several bones in his right wing, which did not heal properly. Unfortunately, because of this, he can not fly well enough to survive on his own in the wild. He does have some flight abilities, however, and we have recently begun training him to fly from our glove to a perch. It is early in the training, however, and at this time he would rather fly over the perch, and land on the ground.

If you visit Cody, be sure to visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, and look for us, as we not only offer programs, but can also often be seen with the birds in the garden, or within the museum itself. Ask us questions, and attend one of our summer programs. Of course the birds need their rest away from the public, so we do not have the birds out all day long. If you don’t see us, inquire at the main information desk, to find out what the schedule is for viewing the birds.
You may have noticed the damage to our peregrine falcon's wing. All of our birds are non-releasable. Hayabusa suffered an impact injury, which causes her wing to droop, and prevents her from extending her wing fully, therefore she will never be able to fly well. We are hoping that feathers will re-grow over the injured area, but so far this has not happened. Except for the damaged wing, Hayabusa is an alert, healthy bird.

Isham the red-tailed hawk resides at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. He is helping to educate visitors to the museum about birds of prey, through the BBHC’s Greater Yellowstone Raptor Experience programs. In this short video you will meet Melissa Hill, the assistant curator of the natural history section of the museum, and the person in charge of the program, and Isham, who was having a series of photos taken of him that day. Isham is a non-releasable red-tailed hawk, named after Buffalo Bill Cody's favorite white horse that he rode in his Wild West shows.

Golden Eagle Family Cody Date Added: Aug 22, 2011

On June 30,2011 I had the joy of seeing the entire golden eagle family in my research nest at the same time. At the beginning of the video you will see one parent and the chick in the nest. As you watch the video, you will see the arrival of the second parent. It was the first and only time that I saw all three eagles in my study nest at one time. What a thrill!

The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center is a good place to learn more about bears and wolves. This is a very short video of a wolf at the center.

Bison often move from the area around Bridge Bay Campground down to the lake and back up, often passing through the campground on these journeys. This video shows you one group of bison passing by our campsite.

A Very Small Bathtub Pismo State Beach Date Added: Jun 7, 2008

While camping in the southern section of Pismo State Beach in California, I set a dish of water on the ground, and was soon surprised when a mated pair of mallard ducks decided it was a great place to hang out for a while. The male took a few drinks, but the female stepped right in and began to take a bath. In the video you will see the female as she picks up beak fulls of water and runs it through her feathers. The male, waiting for the female to finish her bath, took the time to have a few sips of water out of his mate’s bathtub.

Driving on Pismo Beach Pismo State Beach Date Added: Jun 7, 2008

Pismo Beach, located in the town of Pismo, is the only California beach where there are areas set aside where people are allowed to drive vehicles on the beach. This is possible as the sand along the water’s edge of this beach is firm enough to support cars and trucks. In this video you see the northern section of beach in Pismo State Beach, where vehicles are allowed to drive.

Feeding Ducks At the Cabin Houghton Date Added: Jun 6, 2008

In the summer time many female mallard ducks bring their babies up and down the lake looking for both natural foods and human handouts. Many people along the lakeshore enjoy supplementing the duckling’s meals. Mama ducks remember from year to year which cabins and homes feed, and will return each year with their new brood, hoping for a free meal for the little ones. Many people up and down the lake feed white bread, which is more of a stomach filler than a nutritional meal. Wanting to be a little better than the average, we make sure to purchase whole wheat or multi-grained breads. Some years they also eat the high protein dog food that we feed the geese families. As years go by, the adult drakes never return for a human hand out, and the females only return with their young. Knowing that the adult ducks do not become dependent on human handouts, and seeing that they only approach people who feed, and are wary of all others, I only feel a little guilty for indulging in this fun, summer pastime.

I took this video in Carpinteria in February. This is an area where Harbor Seals give birth to their young, beginning in January and lasting into May. The mother Harbor Seal in this video wanted to take her pup into the water for a swim. Once she had him in the surf, however, the little one wanted to nurse. Since this wasn’t what mom had in mind, she did not give in to him. The pup and mom then touch noses together, and head out into the water. A little while later, when mom is trying to bring the pup back to the beach, the little one decides it was so much fun, that he tries to go out for another swim.

We often enjoy a three or four week summer sail, crossing Lake Superior from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Ontario, Canada. We always check into Canada at the city of Thunder Bay, where we spend a day or two before leaving civilization behind, and sailing east, down the wilderness island coast of Ontario. In this video we are sailing out of Thunder Bay under full sail with a good wind pushing us along our way.

My Favorite Buoy Copper Harbor Date Added: Jun 4, 2008

I love the musical sound of bell buoys. This is the only buoy of that type that we regularly sail past, and therefore it is my favorite buoy in the sailing areas that we frequent. Ever changing, depending on the type of waves at the time, this can be a soft greeting, or a loud warning, but it is always a welcoming sound as we enter or leave Copper Harbor in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
