Everyone's Mexican at the Cinco de Mayo parade

by SilverVelvet - last update: Sep 11, 2002

I visited our terrific Mexican neighborhood in Detroit to watch the annual parade to celebrate the victory of Mexico over France. The first photo was the beginning of the parade.
These lovely ladies were distracted from their waving duties by some adoring fans who lined the street.
It's just not a parade without a parade princess or two. Unfortunately, Miss Teen Mexico didn't smile for my camera.
But the tiny Miss Princessita waved to me.
The men showed their lowrider cars that could bounce, jump and perform tricks for the crowd.
One of the tricks for a lowrider car is to let some of the air out from the front tires.
Can't afford a lowrider car? No problemo. There are always the lowrider bicycles.
This man sold cotton candy and souvenier Mexican flags from his shopping cart.
The children were so vibrant in their costumes.
The mariachi band kept the crowd clapping in time to the beat.
The dressage horses performed tricks for the crowd.

Your pictures are excellent. My Dad grew up on Edison and the house is still in the family. I've been told by my dad that there are some homes on Boston Ave with bowling alleys and swimming pools in the basement. David Luton Bedfordshire UK

Your pages on Detroit are superb. As a former resident and longtime fan of Detroit I'm so pleased to see what you've done here. Perhaps you should consider moving the BE & Corktown sections in Things to Do. Cheers, Franklin
