Market Day: A Saturday tradition since 1891

by SilverVelvet - last update: Sep 11, 2002

The Farmer's Market at Eastern Market has been a weekly party on Saturdays since 1891. On this Saturday, there was music in the air from street musicians, boomboxes spilling with sweet salsa beats and venders who shouted their prices into the crowd.

The air smelled of beautiful flowers and the promise of ribs open roasted on a pit in front of a popular jazz club.

And then there was the crowd ... children dodged between shoppers, veiled Islamic ladies shopped with their families and one exotic African lady was dressed in a long robe and balanced a large tray of strawberries on her head while she walked.

The market has several sheds and venders in the surrounding areas, but the first photo is the main shed.
There are many flower venders each weekend, but during one weekend in May, there's a special flower market which is one of the largest in the country.
The surrounding buildings are open daily such as R. Hirt Jr. that has been selling hoursewares for decades.
Rafal's is a special spot for coffeebeans, teas, herbs and spices. There are special beans and blends from Cuba, Venezuela, New Orleans, Hawaii, Scandinavia and so many more.
Rafal's stocks about twenty types of chili pepper.
This man was playing the blues on his steel drums.
Apples are a popular fruit that are grown in my state. This man sold several different varieties as well as apple cider.
A few tempting reasons why the apples are so popular here.
Perhaps a vision of Cezanne?
Americans typically don't like to bargain much, but prices often change at the end of the day.
"Ok folks," the strawberry seller on the left yelled into the crowd. "We got strawberries, four dollars a box. Come on folks, help me go home. I got a heavy date tonight!"

I helped her to go home early and my roommate can't wait to eat some strawberry pie.

Your pictures are excellent. My Dad grew up on Edison and the house is still in the family. I've been told by my dad that there are some homes on Boston Ave with bowling alleys and swimming pools in the basement. David Luton Bedfordshire UK

Your pages on Detroit are superb. As a former resident and longtime fan of Detroit I'm so pleased to see what you've done here. Perhaps you should consider moving the BE & Corktown sections in Things to Do. Cheers, Franklin
