General info Clervaux is about 50 km (30 miles) north of Luxembourg City in the heart of the Ardennes Mountain region known locally as the Eisleck. The village nestles in a crook of the Clerve river and is overlooked by a 15th century castle, a Romanesque church with twin spires and a large Benedictine monastery. We visited the castle and the church, the monastery on the hill top was too far a walk for my family unfortunately. and a collection of World War II memorabilia from the Battle of the Bulge that was fought in this region. Most poignant of all, is the room dedicated to the Luxembourg Holocaust. Its walls are lined with thousands of identity papers, interment orders, and obituaries of Luxembourgers who died on the battlefield, in concentration camps or before firing squads while fighting for their freedom during the World War II occupation. I found this part of the exhibition the most confronting and only looked for a short while. My kids however, where very interested. |
This beautiful piece of art is on a wall facing the monument of the soldier. Just wonderful! one can feel the cheer of the people greeting the tanks rolling in bringing liberation. |
Replicas of castles The castle now houses several small museums. One of those contain scale model replicas of every castle in Luxembourg. Several replicas were missing when we visited tho. On this photograph you can see one of the rooms, this one with the castle of Vianden. |
In the tower room is the replica of the castle of Clervaux. |
Tanks in the courtyard In the courtyard before the castle, stands a single German 88mm gun and an American Sherman tank with an 88mm hole drilled neatly through the base of its gun turret. If you ask any "old timer" from Clervaux, he or she will for sure tell the story of "The liberation of Clervaux." It sounds a bit different each time, but it usually involves a handful of German occupiers with a single artillery gun and a lone American tank. |
The family of man The largest photographic collection ever shown, that s how 'The family of man' is called. The American photographer Edward J. Steichen, born in Luxembourg started to compose this collection in 1951, to explain human his humanity. The traveling exhibition was a great success. In 1964, when the world tour ended, the collection was donated to Luxembourg by the American government on request of Edward Steichen. Steichen thought that the most important work of his life had to be given to Luxembourg. The collection was restored and on June 3th, 1994, the exhibition in the castle of Clervaux. 'The family of man' had found its final place in a historical and didactic environment for this collection is a roll call for human dignity. |
Information board As in every town there is an information board to guide you through the city. Clervaux tho has most important must visit buildings in close range of one and other so we did not need a closer look than this. |
War monument Close to the city center is this monument for the soldiers who fought for to liberate Clervaux. |
Remembrance day just had taken place some days before we were here. |
