The Baths, Virgin Gorda Jean negotiating a walkway. Picture by Joan Lee Virgin Gorda's famous attraction. Huge rocks helter skelter form cave like grottoes. The trail scrambles over rocks, through pools of ocean water, under rock arches, over wooden walkways illuminated by slanting rays of sunshine through crevices. |
Storm clouds at sunset The calm before the night storm. Colors change minute by minute, cloud shapes turn this way and that. No need for TV. |
Small nurse shark Bob Davis, our dive instructer, caught the nurse shark. After petting the rough skin and looking into the shark's eyes, we released the disoriented shark that swam right into Jim's crotch. Both were quite surprised. |
Sponges and Corals Scuba and snorkeling sites abound in the BVI's. Diving gets intimate with undersea landscapes and tropical fish. Floating in the swells with the fish is a great way to appreciate a foreign environment. |
Wreck of the Rhone Dive site BVI's provide anchor balls at popular dive sites to miminize impact on the fragile environment. This wreck is situated on the lee side of Salt Island, spread out over a couple of acres, parts of the wreck are shallow enough so that they can be enjoyed by snorkelers and scuba divers at the same time. The Royal Mail Steam Ship Rhone, a 310-foot long iron-hulled steam-sailor, was built in Southampton, England in 1865 and was sunk by a hurricane a mere two years later on October 29th, 1867. |
A fish, a fish! Jean has found a fish! Photo by Joan Lee Fish can be found swimming about. A totally unearthy beautiful experience. |
Virgin Gorda desert landscape After rock scrambling at the Baths, we hiked through dry desert landscapes past magestic cacti standing amid boulders. The distant ocean swells, cacti and changing clouds paint a picture of romance and pirates. |
Top of The Baths Joan Lee enjoying the pool. After a sweaty hike, cresting a hill we came upon Top of The Baths Restaurant. Rum drinks, food and a dip in the cool pool are just rewards. The owners invite restaurant patrons to swim in the natural rock swimming pool. |
Catching dinner, Captain Jim Capt'n Jim, pursued his prey with vigor and determination. Jim Cooke, the tourist and bag holder, almost lost a lobster by not tightening the bag opening. He puched the lobster back in but suffered a puncture wound into his knuckle joint from the deadly spine above the lobsters eye. Jim felt justified and ate the lobster for dinner. |
Fresh lobster, yum A custom made stainless steel (resists salt water corrosion) grill is essential for that outdoor experience. Some dive area's are nicknamed the "grocery store" because fresh seafood is abundant for the picking or catching. |
Gourmet meals Part of chartering a sailboat with a cook is the exceptional meals and pampering I experienced every single day. Not only breakfast, lunch and dinner, but gourmet snacks. Even with all the scuba diving and hiking, I gained weight but enjoyed every minute of it. |
Daybreak Being on the water, breezes cooled us and drove pesky mosquitoes and no-see-um's away. Each day, each different anchorage brought mesmerizing scenery, sunrises and sunsets. |
Sunset Nothing to do but relax and watch the beautiful sun set. That's what a sailing cruise is all about, relaxation. |
