REASONS TO SAIL

by JeanCooke - last update: Dec 17, 2000

WHAT IS A VACATION ON A SAILBOAT?

And what did we all do for 15 days on a sailboat isolated from Western Civilization?

The newly weds on their honeymoon, spent time laying on one another grooming each other at their "petting and scratching station". Dan and Jenn sunned themselves or retreated to the shade of their master suite reading novels. Jenn and Dan really enjoyed walking the streets, mingling with the natives and exploring the bazaars of Nadi and Lautoka.

Rita fished, laid around and read novels or cleaned up the mess generated by the rest of us. Rita watched Laisa to learn about cooking on a boat. Rita enjoyed the snorkeling and scuba diving except when barracuda or sea snakes came near.

Jean became one with the sea, sky and boat, daydreaming about nothing in particular, enjoying the snorkeling, swimming and scuba. Jean took daily notes in the Palm and interviewed Laisa and Julian.

Jim was "on vacation" and read nothing. Jim watched the sea and waves, enjoyed the fish and soft corals, talked politics and dialed in the short wave morning and evening for updates on the Fiji coup. Jim joked and talked with Julian and Laisa and bantered back and forth with Art.

Art read, "Survival at Sea" and "The Perfect Storm" just in case we needed information on problems at sea. Art fretted and worried about the coup and if we would ever get out of Fiji on time, on schedule and without becoming hostages. Art enjoyed the hikes, cave exploration and village children.

Art and Jim followed Julian around inspecting the boat, fixing a starter rotor for the anchor and picking Julian's brain about sailing.

Julian and Laisa were just their relaxed Fiji selves entertaining us with stories and Fiji wisdom
