Kilconquhar, locally pronounced "kinneucker"

Quiet residential streets invite casual strolling into the village center a few blocks away.

Village center

Perched on rolling hills, this village has an old stone church, a post office, and a few public buildings/businesses, one of which is the delightful Kinneuchar Inn for meals and brews. "Most of the inhabitants of this village are weavers, fishers, and colliers," according to one brochure.

Kilconquhar Parish Church

It may date back to only the mid 1800s, but it is a charming old stone church in a picturesque setting, with very fine sweeping views of the countryside.

Other nearby villages

As this old marker in Kilconquhar Village shows, Elie and Earlsferry on the North Sea coast is just another short walk away, while St. Andrews is easily reached by local bus.

Elie, a medieval fishing village

Along open green flower-studded meadows and rolling hills and past Kilconquhar Loch, we walked the mile or so into this village, now considered a holiday resort. In May, however, it was nearly deserted under mostly sunny skies that day.

Elie's harbor, at low tide

This has been an active fishing harbor since at least the 16th century. Now the protected harbor attracts more sailboats and windsurfers in the summertime than fisherfolk.

Nearby prehistoric standing stones

Not far from Kilconquhar by car are three (of four) ancient Pictish standing stones preserved on the grounds of a public golf course called Lundin Links. It was a huge treat to get permission from the groundskeeper to walk right up to them and touch them.
