The sparkling facades of nowadays' temples - departemnt stores and shopping malls, that is - have invaded Chemnitz like any other city. Their contents are usually the same chain stores as everywhere else. Sigh.

At least some of them have chosen architects with ideas and imagination and their architecture is worth looking at them twice (twice is enough, though). There is first of all Helmut Jahn's glass department store for Kaufhof.
Its neighbour, Roter Turm mall, has a castle-like architecture with a couple of neo-neo-neo-hm-gothic elements that are probably supposed to refer to the tower and the medieval town wall. The result looks a bit strange...
