The postage stamp above was issued by DDR post in 1982 for some conference that took place in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Couldn't figure out what it was about). What does it show of the city? The new socialist city centre with the Marx monument, the congress centre with the hotel skyscraper (where that conference took place, I assume), and the adjacent fountain and the Red Tower, and a modern Plattenbau (post building???).

The original city sign (left) is on display in the Museum of Industry.

Socialist town planning in Straße der Nationen: shops along the street, apartment buildings (Plattenbau, of course) lined up behind them.

Karl Marx monument and the wide street that was used for parades and manifestations. The large building served as the seat of the regional state and party authorities. This is the best-known piece of socialist architecture in the city.

The congress centre next to it, and the highest skyscraper of the city, now Hotel Mercure.

Another view of the convention hall.

Renovated Plattenbau apartment houses

A relief in the city centre that recalls the rebuilding of the city after the war as a joint effort of all workers. The inscription says, "What you cannot cope with alone, unite with others who want the same to achieve it." A socialist slogan, sure, but - there is some truth in it, no doubt!
