These were my first impressions of Chemnitz: passing on a train during the return journey from Freiberg in December 2010. It was a splendid sunny winter's day, though freezing cold. The day before we had received 70 cms of fresh snow and more snowfall was announced. With a seven hour train journey ahead of me I did not dare to do any stopovers that day. But I was curious about the city.

The tall chimney of the heating plant dominated the skyline. Temperatures were below -10°C, hence it was very busy.

Friendly winter sunlight and fresh snow make everything look clean and beautiful. These buildings are part of the station area.

A street with a tram line South of the city centre.

And another tram line.

The towers in the background belong to the city hall and mark where the centre is. And there is the tall chimney again.

The railway runs in a semicircle around the centre of Chemnitz, and those tracks are on a dam or on bridges, notably higher than street level. From the bridges that cross larger streets these views into the city opened up.

I didn't envy those people down there. Waiting at a tram stop on the way to work on this freezing cold morning did not look like fun.
