Johanna Beach Camping Weekend: 2-3 days

You have a free weekend in Melbourne. You have a rented car. You don't know what to do... But you want an adventure.

THIS IS WHERE YOU FIND THAT ADVENTURE. Welcome to the Johanna Beach Weekend. Invite your friends - The more the merrier.

Itinerary: Saturday day

3-DAY: Start early Friday instead of early Saturday

Saturday: Get an early start and head out of the city at 6am. You will find this incredibly worth it as you manage to see the sun coming up over the CBD on your way out.

Get on the Great Ocean Road right out of Colac for a 3 hour drive on what is commonly called one of the best car rides in the world.

Take a break in Bells Beach (5 min detour with plenty of signs to follow) and see where you can grab a fancy breakfast at one of the many beachside cafes.

After an energising coffee, get back into your car and don't stop till you get to Johanna beach. Take Red Johanna Road - it's a bumpy but beautiful ride into Johanna Campsite. Camping here is free - pick any open spot and set up a tent.

After you're set up, the next order of business is lunch. There are toilets and a place to wash however, so don't think you're in total wilderness.

Explore the area, and get set up to watch the sunset on the beach. Nachos, salsa, friends and a magnificent sunset rolling over surf-breaks - what better ways are there to spend your time?

Itinerary: Saturday night

If you stay down on the beach after your nachos, you can engage in some sand dune jumping or water frolicking. A midnight dip is always an excellent idea - but for the love of goodness do not go in past where you can stand. The surf here is vicious and and will easily pull you out.

Have dinner, a few drinks and some tunes back at the campsite.

Itinerary: Sunday morning

Early morning, and after what was no doubt a big night of drinking...

The sun and sounds will wake you. You can do your best to sleep in, if you're an especially heavy sleeper. But personally, I think the best way to get over your hangover is a quick early morning dip. The water is freezing - exactly what you need.

Then, switch tactics and have a hot breakfast with plenty of tea. Laze about, enjoying the sunlight, then if you want go for a walk along any one of the amazing trails starting in or heading out of Johanna Beach.

It's nearly time to head back to civilisation. Grab a celebratory dinner at the Apollo Bay Hotel on your way home.
