"The Old Town" Plauen Travelogue by Russell_the_Wombat

Plauen Travel Guide: 16 reviews and 131 photos

We stayed in a very pretty burrow, the one in the photo above. From there it was just a short walk to the centre of the city. We had to walk down the hill and cross the so-called "tunnel".

Humans in Plauen have no idea what tunnels really are, trust a professional digger. Their "tunnel" is a street in a small valley, partly covered by a modern parking garage that belongs to the shopping mall. It is useful to know, though, because down there they have the central tram stop where all lines connect.

From the other hillside we had a panoramic view of the old town with the double steeples of Johanniskirche on the left and the big tower of the new town hall. The view has its qualities if you succeed in ignoring the ugly car park.

Passing through the shopping mall we finally reached the old town. Here the streets start looking a lot nicer.

In the background you see again the big tower of the town hall.

This little tower is the only bit that is left of the old town's fortifications. They call it the "nuns' tower for whatever reason - we did not see any nuns around.

That local human ran into my photo without us noticing. I think he is one of those who have never seen a wombat...

This square has some cafes and little shops. On my right (your left) it has the big stereotype shopping mall, though. Seems most humans shop there and ignore the little shops. Sniff.

The signposts are everywhere. They point to the attractions of the old town and are really useful. Plauen is prepared for visitors but there were hardly any except us.

Construction sites exist in Plauen, too. But the interesting bart of the photo (apart from me, of course) is the white building with the red window frames: That is the old town hall.

Walking around the old town hall you reach the main market square.

This is Plauen's prettiest view: the beautiful facade of the old town hall seen from market square.
