"Wedding Day" Galicnik Travelogue by tayloretc

Galicnik boasts one very special annual event ? a town-wide traditional wedding, held in mid-July. It used to be a mass wedding of local men back from working abroad to the girls they left behind, but today it?s all focused on one couple selected to represent this old tradition.

It?s quite the spectacle and draws a large crowd for events during the entire weekend. It took me longer to get there on Sunday than I had anticipated, so I missed the groom racing in on horseback and firing three shots (to call everyone to the wedding and warn potential suitors away), the bride?s mother?s welcome and dance, the groom placing a bridle on the bride?s head (?!), and the wedding itself.

I did make it in time for the final dancing/street celebration, though, which was something. It was packed, so my view was from the church plaza.

The women get things started?

The musicians really get into it?

The guys do ?the difficult one??

And eventually, everyone joins in. Well, all the groups of professional dancers, plus the official wedding party. After they?re done, though, the wedding party and a lot of the spectators mingle, or head off to the cafes and bars for the rest of the afternoon.
