Hurricane Irene was barreling up I-95 and missed most of South Carolina but we still got high winds and waves at the house on 40 Cabin Road, Hunting Island. The water was at Hi-tide when we arrived and was under the stilted house, battering the dead trees against the pylons, making booming sounds throughout the house til about 9.....
After a harrowing night, Seaside Getaways, our renter, immediately moved us up to a 4 bedroom house on the beach at Harbour Island, next island over. We loved it for the next 3 nights, and want to definitely recommend Seaside Getaways (seasidegetaways.com) for renting in the area. Top notch service from Greta and Erik....The house came with a golf cart fro exploring the resort, including a pool and bird/alligator viewing. Harbour Island is not cheap, but the privacy and relaxation make it worthwhile.
Definitely check out Gay Fish Company and the Shrimp Shack on nearby Helena Island for fresh fish and shrimp, and Shrimpburgers!

From I-95 travelling north----Take exit 8 (278 East) follow Beaufort signs and turn left on #141 (after the Auto Mall)
Left on #170 until you cross the Broad River bridge, turn rt on 802---keep on #802 over the Ladys Island bridge and turn rt on Hiway 21----keep on til you get to your island!
