The town's community spirit shone through!

Cockermouth made headline news for nation-wide floods in 2009. On 19th and 20th November 2009, the Cocker and Derwent rivers that join the Cockermouth rose very highly and flooded the town. It caused a lot of destruction in such a very short space of time! It affected many businesses and took some as long as two years to resume trading. Many residents had to be rescued and evacuated and many lived in temporary accommodation.

When we visited Cockermouth, we still saw some empty properties that were affected and also 'markings' where the floods rose despite the town was back to 'business as usual! ' Wordsworth House was badly affected and it took a long time for the National Trust property to be restored from a video we saw and how the town's community spirit shone during that difficult time.
