Mohamed Alher ag Almahdi woont in het noordoosten van Mali in een klein dorpje in de woestijn een paar uur rijden vanaf Timboektoe. Hij is edelsmid, een beroep dat al generaties over gaat van vader op zoon. In zijn regio heeft hij een samenwerkingsverband voor Toeareg edelsmeden opgericht, waar hij voorzitter van is. Stapje voor stapje proberen zij hun dorp, eigenlijk niet veel meer dan een verzameling nomadententen, op te bouwen. Er is een put aangelegd en een schoolgebouwtje neergezet met hulp van vrienden uit Groot Britannië. In deze school leren de kinderen Frans, de taal die in Mali wordt gesproken naast alle stamtalen. Mohamed, geboren als nomade in de woestijn, is zelf analfabeet. Daarom vindt hij het belangrijk, dat de kinderen in het dorp leren lezen en schrijven.

Mohamed Alher ag Almahdi lives in the north east of Mali in a small village in the desert a few hours drive from Timbuktu. He is a blacksmith, which is a traditional Tuareg profession from father to son for many generations. In his region he founded a cooperation for Tuareg blacksmiths. He is the president of this cooperation, called 'friendship'. Step by step they try to support their village, in reality not more than a dwelling of some nomad tents. They built a well and a small school with help of friends from the United Kingdom. In this school the kids learn French, the official language spoken in Mali besides many local languages. Mohamed, born as nomad in the desert, never had the possibity to attend a school himself. That's why it's so important for him, that the kids in the small village in the middle of the desert learn to read and write.

SIVO African market 2009

In 2009 was Mohamed Alher voor het eerst in Emmen op uitnodiging van Ali Zingstra. Zij ontmoette hem eerder dat jaar op het Toeareg ‘Festival au Desert’ bij Timboektoe. Vorige zomer was hij gast op de Afrikaanse markt op het SIVO festival in Odoorn. Ook heeft hij sieraden verkocht op de vlindermarkt in Emmen en aan een winkel in Groningen.

In 2009 Mohamed came for the first time to Emmen, invited by Ali Zingstra. She met him earlier that year at the Tuareg 'Festival au Desert' not far from Timbuktu. Last year he was guest at the African market at the SIVO dance Festival in Odoorn, a village a few km's from Emmen. Mohamed also has sold his jewellery at the so called Butterfly market in Emmen and in a shop in Groningen.

Met de opbrengsten van 2009 heeft hij bij de school een groentetuin aangelegd om de kinderen die ver moeten lopen om de school te bezoeken te eten te geven. Ook kon hij met het geld uit Emmen en Odoorn lesmateriaal kopen voor het tweede schooljaar. Voor tafels en stoelen was er nog niet genoeg geld.

With the money he earned in the Netherlands in 2009 he could make a school garden. So the village can produce vegetables for the kids who have to walk from far to attend the school. Mohamed could also buy schoolbooks for the second class, which started in september 2009 for the first time. For tables and chairs there was no money yet.

Full Colour Festival, 10 pendants left

Vol goede moed kwam Mohamed Alher in 2010 als gast van de WOE (Werkgroep Ontwikkelingssamenwerking Emmen) in augustus naar het Full Colour Festival in Emmen. Helaas is op weg naar Emmen in de Thalys van Parijs naar Rotterdam zijn reistas gestolen. In deze tas zaten behalve zijn traditionele toeareg kleding, 220 sieraden van de 27 edelsmeden uit zijn dorp. Deze sieraden zijn het dorpskapitaal, hiervan leeft het dorp. Het verlies van de sieraden is een grote ramp voor het dorp.

Theft of his travelbag with jewellery

In 2010 Mohamed came to Emmen again. This time as guest of the WOE (organisation for international cooperation in development) during the Full Colour Festival in august.

In the Thalys from Paris to Rotterdam his travelbag is stolen. In this bag were his traditional tuareg clothes (partly dear family pieces) and 220 pieces of jewellery of the 27 blacksmiths of his cooperation. This jewellery is the source of income of their village. The loss of the jewellery is a huge disaster for the village.

Door een artikel in het Dagblad van het Noorden kwamen veel mensen naar zijn marktkraam op het Full Colour festival en op zijn gastadres bij Co Patist en Ali Zingstra om hem een hart onder de riem te steken. De steunbetuigingen en vele donaties hebben hem diep geraakt. In totaal heeft hij € 1.601,41 aan donaties in Emmen ontvangen.
Veel mensen hebben toen aangegeven te willen weten, hoe het Mohamed Alher in Mali zou vergaan en vroegen om vervolgacties om hem en zijn dorp te ondersteunen.

Disaster for the village

After an article in the regional newspaper in Emmen many people came to his marketstall at the Full Colour Festival or the home address of his hosts Co Patist and Ali Zingstra. Mohamed was touched by this support and the donations. Totally he received € 1.601,41 donations in Emmen. Many people asked to get informed about what would happen with Mohamed and his village in Mali. They asked also about new fundraising opportunities to support his village.

Begin september 2010 is Mohamed in zijn dorp aangekomen. Iedereen was erg opgelucht, dat hij veilig terug gekomen is. Dat was nog erg spannend. In de hoofdstad Bamako moest Mohamed Alher € 4.000 afdragen aan handelaren, waarvan hij sieraden had meegenomen in consignatie. Door bemiddeling van het ministerie van kunstnijverheid is dit goed afgelopen. De handelaren waren voorlopig tevreden met de € 1500, die hij vanuit Emmen meenam. Hij kwam niet in de politiecel, zoals zijn dorp en hijzelf vreesden. Door de tussenkomst van het ministerie mocht hij eerst terugreizen naar zijn dorp en hoefde hij pas in januari 2011 nog een resterend bedrag van € 2.400 terug te betalen.

Eind februari 2011 was het resterende bedrag er bijna. Om het hoofdstuk definitief af te sluiten heeft tot slot de minister € 700 bijgelegd en mocht Mohamed voor de resterende € 500 sieraden ter waarde van dit bedrag sturen.

Villagers relieved that Mohamed returned safily

Early september 2010 Mohamed Alher came back to his village. Everybody was relieved, that he returned safily. The situation in Bamako, the capital, looked dangerous for him. In Bamako he had to pay € 4.000 to business men, from whom he got jewellery in consigment. By intervention and mediation of the ministry of artisanat the business men agreed with a first payment of € 1500, which he brought from Emmen. So he didn't end up in prison by the police, as his village and he feared most. By this intervention of the ministry he was allowed to travel back to his village. First in January 2011 he has to pay the missing € 2.400

By end February 2011 Mohamed could close this chapter almost, but the donations and savings were not enough for Mohamed to pay the whole amount. Finally the ministery paid € 700 and the village could send the last € 500 in jewelry. Problem solved and case closed.

People of n Dalla

Terug uit Nederland na het festival in Emmen (augustus 2010) moest hij drie dagen reizen met de bus naar Timboektoe en vandaar naar zijn dorp, waar hij zijn familie en dorpsgenoten terugzag. Weer terug in Timboektoe kon hij naar Nederland bellen. Hij vertelde zijn Emmense gastvrouw Ali Zingstra, dat de mensen in het dorp blij waren hem veilig terug te zien, maar ook ontredderd door de diefstal van hun sieraden met een verkoopwaarde van € 5.000. Het gevolg was dat 27 families, zo’n 100 mensen, voor langere tijd zonder inkomsten zaten. De edelsmeden konden geen materialen kopen om nieuwe sieraden te maken. Ook was er nauwelijks geld meer voor de dagelijkse levensbehoeften, zoals het kopen van rijst en thee.

Village devastated by the theft of the jewellery

After 3 days of travelling with the bus from Bamako to Timbuktu and from there to his desert village he met his family and fellow villagers again. Back in Timbuktu he could call me. He told me, that the people of the village were happy to see him back safily, but also devastated by the theft of their jewellery, which they normally sell for € 5.000. The result was that 27 families, about 100 people, had no income for a long time. The blacksmiths were not able to buy new materials for making new jewellery. There was also lack of money for the daily life, like buying rice and tea.

Door veel donaties eind 2010 en begin 2011 zijn de direct gevolgen van de diefstal opgelost. Mohamed en zijn dorp bedanken iedereen voor de steun. Het dorp vraagt nog steeds ondersteuning voor de school, de schooltuin en de inrichting van een net gebouwd kliniekje.

By many donations the mayor problems caused by the theft are solved. For example by 234 votes the village was the winner of the € 1.000 donated by the e-factor. by the factor-e. Mohamed and his village are very happy and grateful with these generous donations.

Latest news: Due to the dangerous situation in northern Mali most of the families left in march-april 2012 the village and stay in the neigbouring country Burkina Faso. In february 2013 I visited the refugeecamp close to Ouagadougou to support Mohamed and the villagers.
