"Cebu" Personal Page by travelingcebuano
Cebu is the second most significant metropolitan city in the Philippines. It is also said to be the oldest city in the country, based when the first Spanish settlement was established in the Philippines. A good way of getting to know more about its history, is to visit the Museo de Sugbo, Cebu's provincial museum. An informative tour awaits you, explaining Cebu's history from the pre-Spanish times, the Spanish era, to the second world war and post war eras as well.
Here is a picture of the southern part of Cebu. The metropolitan area is called Metro Cebu, which includes Cebu and the the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay. My guess is, Metro Cebu has a total population of around 2 million people.
To the west of Cebu, beyond the hills and mountains, is the city of Toledo. A great vantage point, which has great views of the entire city of Cebu would be the place called "Tops" or "Top of Cebu' in the Busay area. It is around a thirty minute drive and the best time to go would be at night, to see the city lights sparkle all around you.
As you can see in the picture, Cebu has an active domestic shipping port. In fact, a large portion of the country's domestic shipping companies are based in Cebu. From Cebu, there are ferries to Bohol, Siquijor, Dumaguete, Ormoc and other nearby islands and cities.
Uptown Cebu is where most offices, malls, restaurants and hotels can be found. Though not many locals would walk from place to place (due to the heat, I guess), but it can be done. A jeepney ride to each destination is a fun and affordable way to get from point to point in Cebu. Taxis are everywhere as well. And yes, most taxi drivers in Cebu can be trusted. You can easily report them to the authorities!
