I had to place my husband beside the begonias they had in the glass house of the Botanic Garden in Christchurch, NZ, until early April, so you get an idea how huge those flowers were. Without this comparison you would think they would be smaller - or not begonias ;-)
The flowers were easily as big as dahlia, and so heavy that they had to attach them to stakes, so the stems did not break.

They always have special flower exhibits in the glass house. Plus, there is a permanent area just with lush tropical vegetation, with very humid air, and another space with cacti and orchids that need less water.

Begonias are spectacular in hanging baskets, too. We often drive past a house where they have such amazing hanging baskets along the whole verandah. Another place which springs to mind is the city of Nelson where they have some of the main streets decorated with hanging begonia baskets.

Isn't it wonderful which pretty species they grow?

If not for the totally different centre, this begonia would look like a dahlia. |
| |
Flashing into the blossom creates this rather impressive look.

This, of course, is no begonia but a hydrangea. They contribute to the colourful display of the gardens in autumn. In Christchurch they have quite a lot of impressive old plants which flower for months and months.

The dahlias are another autumn favourite. In Christchurch's Botanic Garden they surround the beautiful Rose Garden. Right behind the green dividing hedge you would admire the roses.
