| Page Views: 119 | Greedy young Sparrows on the Balcony by Kakapo2 - last update: Apr 29, 2009 |
As I have lived in the city of sparrows - Ulm in Germany - for more than 20 years, I always have a heart for sparrows, although they are no rare or special birds. But by watching them, I have found out that they are a very nice species and very nice to each other. They do not fight a lot over food and seem to be big happy families.
We have sparrows nesting under our roof and have somehow left them their space. Once my husband had climbed into the roof space and come back with a huge nest, really impressive. I often watch them flying with grass and other nesting material in their beaks, and they crawl into the most incredible spaces. This obviously also happens in our roof. At some point I hear the chirp-chirp of the young over the pantry. Then I know that I soon have to look around for them getting their first flying lessons.

Once when sitting in the office at the top level of our house, I saw a whole bunch of young sparrows hopping around. So I went and rubbed some bread between my hands, and threw the whole lot of crumbs for all of them on the floor. It did not take long until they came back.

Most of the young sparrows nicely fed on the crumbs but one or two were still in the phase of begging their mother to feed them.
|
| |
The poor mother is not much bigger than the young. She is totally relaxed, picks her food, eats some crumbs herself, and puts the rest in the open beaks of the the ones who open their wings and flick them.

| |
The siblings are unimpressed by the mother treating the noisy one in such a priviledged way.
|
| |
This is only about half of the flock of new arrivals in the sparrow world.
|
| |
The feeding rituals went on until the last crumb was eaten.
|
| |
I stopped the feeding after several days, as I have no water hose on the top deck, and had to clean away all the bird poo with wipes.
But be sure, I will feed them again in winter, then with special finch food which I buy in 20 kilo bags - and six metres further down where I have a hose ready for the near daily cleaning procedure... ;-)
