Far more fun was when we joined the local elephants the following morning for a bathe. Juliet and I took turns to ride bare-back out into the river and get a good dunking, followed by a swim, hoping the obviously delighted elephants splashing around might scare off any marsh mugger crocodiles.

We cycled to an elephant breading center a few kilometers away. A group of Indian women were visiting and they tried to feed biscuits to a three-foot high baby jumbo, who took an obvious dislike to the Indian made Hide And Seek cookies and charged them, sending the cackling group of sari-clad ladies screaming in every direction.

Three days was enough. We had learnt that any more time off the bikes had a detrimental effect on our already knackered bodies, as muscles began to relax.
