Jakkajaan - Phuket specialty

by Tina-Perth - last update: Mar 4, 2009

Finding the little critters

These three girls are looking for jakkajaan without the usual net because they're actually our masseuses, who'd been giving us a massage on the beach, so they weren't prepared for jakkajaan "hunting". Normally a net is pushed into the sand at the water's edge to pick up the "sea grasshoppers" or "sea cicadas", as they're known as the waves pull back.

The Jakkajaan up close

So, this is what they look like.

Finished product

This is a dish of cooked Jakkajaan. Very, very delicious! Similar to prawns I guess.

Make sure you try some if you can.

Dengue is transmitted by the aedes (striped) day-biting mosquito. Malaria you get from the anopheles (brownish) night-biting mosquito.

The more I read and see about this country, the more I would like a visit. Just wish it was some thousands of miles closer. Nice job of presenting the beauty, and have a good life with the sunbear.
