The Constitution Bridge is the new and fourth bridge spanning the FGC* as we call the Grand Canal in this house. It connects Piazzale Roma with the train station, Santa Lucia. It was unofficially called the Calatrava bridge, named after it architect and most people still call it thus.
It opened a few weeks ago in Summer 2008 and it is quite beautiful, even if it suffered the usual Italian time and cost overruns. As you can see, it has a gentle, graceful slope which means the central portion has no steps. However, the remainder does have steps which have a very low rise, 8 centimeters. The tread distance is 40 cm and sometimes 80 where the architect deemed it necessary. In addition, the treads are made of blue-green glass and held in place by brass surrounds. |
