Sunday 1 march 2009 Annabel felt down in the dry ditch around the elephant island. It happened while she was hit by tow playing young bulls. For many hours they tried to rescue her, but without any succes. Back on the island she could not stand on her legs anymore. It turned out she was paralysed by a broken vertebra in her neck. unfortunatily it was her time to die. It was heartbreaking, not only for her two dearest caretakers, who accompanied her in her last minutes, but for many people. There are many reactions at different websites and weblogs.
She lived in the zoo behind my backyard for 40 years. The old lady was the mater familias ther of the herd. Her family is mourning for days by scratching the ground at the place she died.
