Big 5 hike - September 2008

3rd times the charm

How the day started...
I've done this hike 3 times now, and it seems to get better every time - maybe it's the people, or maybe it's just that you get used to trekking 17 km over 5 mountains in the space of 8 hours...
Heading up...
Heading up the first peak (Hlolela), the mist begins to part, showing us the climb awaiting us... Rock-climbing without equipment!
Sheer drops on both side, and heading straight up!
Almost at the top now, the mist has burned away, leaving a slightly dirty atmosphere... But the views are still breathtaking.
Not that IS a sheer drop!

Hlolela

Once we finally reach the top, and start heading down towards The Battleship, we notice just how steep the cliffs really are...
Chellock - our experienced and brilliant guide.

The Battleship

On top of The Battleship (peak 2), stopping for a rest...
Up... again...

Sugarloaf

Peak no.3, a bit of a toughie getting up, but even worse on the way down - the first real steep decline...
Cannibal Cavern

Cannibal cavern

After Cold Hill (peak 4), we head down Cavern gap - and absolute brute of a descent - taking almost an hour just on its own. Ultimately we end up in a HUGE cave, where we stop for lunch - nice and cool inside, a chance to kick off your shoes, and nurse sore toes and feet...
The entire group...

Camels Hump

On top of Camels hump, one last photo opportunity, and then the final descent - the only thought in your head - PLEASE GOD, LET THE BEER BE COLD!! :)

You made a small error. The cannibals were not bushmen, they were Zulus who chose not to submit to Shaka. Shaka was a tyrant, and his impis were sent out to destroy those who did not submit to him. Some hid in caves and resorted to cannibalism to survive.
