November 22, 2008 | Wild Sea around the Islands off Callao |
|
| Grand Admiral Grau Lighthouse at 6:45 |
We were scheduled to be in Callao (the port for Lima) at 8:00, and again I looked out the window at about 6:30 and saw an island with a lighthouse, so I ran out on deck to take pictures. We have a tour this morning, so I soon came in and showered and we went to breakfast in the dining room. The special today was Allspice Waffle or Kiwi Pancakes, but I just had oatmeal and Bob had his usual raisin bran. |
| The other boat (slightly out of focus) |
Our tour was a wildlife tour. We had a 10 or 15 minute bus ride to the Marina Yacht Club Callao (the guide pronounced all the letters in 'yacht) where we got on an open boat (two 115 hp engines) with about 25 other people. I sat in back because I thought we might get wet in the front. I was right, but it was harder to take pictures because people kept standing up in front of me and also the boat was jumping around which made focusing with a telephoto zoom very interesting. We set out from the Yacht club (passing the Torre Reloj lighthouse which has a clock on top of it) |
| Gran Almirante Grau Lighthouse |
..and went around Isla San Lorenzo (I got a better picture of the Gran Almirante Grau lighthouse that I had seen coming in - the highest lighthouse in Peru and named after an Admiral who was a hero in the Naval Battle of Angamos during the War of the Pacific). |
When we went around the end of the island out into the Pacific, it got definitely bumpy - not a tour to be on if you get seasick. First we saw some colonies of nesting birds including the Humbolt penguin, some gulls, terns and pelicans. |
Then we visited the Islas Palomino which had another lighthouse and a colony of sea lions who all followed the ship barking at us Finally we rounded another island where there used to be a prison. |
We got back to the ship about 1300 - in good time to eat lunch in the Lido as they did not have table service at lunch today. I had shepherd's pie |
| Looking down on the stalls at the dock |
I tried to edit my 300 photos, but fell asleep. got up just in time for trivia, which we did not win again, although we were close. We missed the city that the ballpark named the Jake was located (Cleveland), and the NASCAR star that won the Daytona 500 in 1997 (Jeff Gordan) and the phrase that made Michael Buffer famous (Let's get ready to rumble) - none of us are very sports oriented an, although I did know the name of the major golf tournament that is played on the same course each year (the Masters). I didn't even know who Michael Buffer was (a boxing ring announcer). We got correct the ancient language of India (Sanskrit), the Broadway musical inspired by Don Quixote (Man of La Mancha), the year Canada became a country (1867 thanks to the Candian couple on our team), and the 17th century English Lord Protector whose head was finally buried after 300 years (Cromwell) For dinner we had Fruits de Mar for an appetizer. Then Bob had the salmon and I had the corned beef entree. For dessert I had Pear Bell Helene Sundae Tomorrow is the Gold Museum tour. |
