Reason to visit Galapagos, Machu Pichu, Llamas, train ride, scenery, people
much better going to Guayaquil since that is where the vast majority of the flights and boats depart for the Islands.

August 31, it's off season on the islands at the moment
finding a tour at the last minute shouldn't be a problem.
leaving out of Quito is fine, there is no need to go to Guayaquil.

Finding a reputable travel agent.......
beware of companies with overinflated prices gouging tourists in Quito.
alternative is book directly with a local Galapagos company (not one of the international/Ecuador companies who have massive overheads). There are a couple local companies that I heard of which offer island hopping (as opposed to being stuck on a boat with other tourists for a week!).
Volcanika Adventures is the only one I can think of at the moment, but there are probably others aswell, although Volcanika is actually island owned which is rare down there. the islands are a blast! You'll meet so many locals and other backpackers if you are into island hopping!

I have a great recommend. for an honest, and trustworthy agent in Quito, who specialize in tours to the Galapagos, and who WON'T rip you off!! She is a treasure!!! And speaks perfect english

Most people visit the Galapagos Islands for a week or less. They fly into Puerto Ayora, hop immediately on the pre-booked cruise. The cruises vary tremendously in price and living standards but while the boats do vary a lot in speed the itineraries do not vary much. The four day cruises do the islands south of Santa Cruz and the three days cruises do those north of it. They segue them together into seven day cruises and thus both tours meet on Santa Cruz. So, even with a cheap cruise you are looking more than $1500, you spending less actual time there.

Some try and go to the islands without booking only to find that while the prices may be a bit lower, the choices are not generally as great. If your dream is to do a luxury cruise of the Galapagos I would say book it in Quito but if you have time allow yourself some additional time to explore not only a few islands that the cruises do NOT go to but also Santa Cruz itself which is given only cursory time. cruises go to the “important” ones but not all

alternative is to make a base on one or any combination of the three big islands of Santa Cruz, Isabella, and San Cristóbol and do day trips from them. This works out to be quite a bit cheaper and for those prone to seasickness it allows them to at least sleep on land. My wife falls into the latter category and though we did shop around for an inexpensive cruise while there we found that doing day trips would allow us to see more of what we wanted to see and not be entirely controlled by other's ideas of what that should be. If one wants to do a week cruise AND properly explore the big three islands, As you can see, the islands while more expensive than the mainland are not all that bad. It's the inflated entrance fee and flights along with the big push to do cruises that makes it so.o

two weeks an absolute minimum better to allow two and a half to three weeks. we spent about $990 per person in our nine night stay in the Galapagos. That includes our flights which ran $435 AND the $100 entrance fee.

Best Time To Visit Scotland 1st week of June is definitely your best bet.
long daylight days, not too many tourists, relatively few midges, June weather is more consistent than "summer weather".
But be prepared for rain. Enjoy!

Tulip fields Posted: Sat January 17, 2009 12:33 PM EST
When is the right time to see Tulips in bloom in the fields? Is it possible (as a visitor) to go to these fields, are there fields that offer such visits?
Thank you Jayanthi

Amsterdam Re: Tulip fields

The best time is April and May and the best place is the Keukenhof. Look up their site http://www.keukenhof.nl/nm/english.html

A very special way to see the blooming bulb fields is by bike.
You can justr stop were you want and enter a lot of these fields. I don't think there are guided tours to bulb fields. See for an example of a bike tour my tip:
http://members.virtualtourist.com/vt/tfr/1/312/4/1c4c5f/

Another must see (at least for foreigners) is the Keukenhof, th most beautiful spring garden in the world (http://www.keukenhof.nl/nm/english.html)

The best time for visiting the 'real' bulb fields is the second half of April.

Just learned that the Zijpe area organises a lot of tulip activities this year; see:

http://www.bloeiendzijpe.nl/createsite/page/createpage.asp?b_id=13809&pg=17

There's a bicycle trip at Sunday April 26 and a walking tour at Saterday May 2.
