Chapelle des Ursulines in Quebec....

Catholicism has been the prevalent religion of the Province of Quebec since the arrival of the first Europeans....

There is I'm sure a multitude of books written about this so I wont go into detail here...except to tell you that throughout all of Quebec City and Old Quebec there are quite a number of ornately designed Churches and quite a few monuments honoring some of the more important personalities relative to the history of Quebec.

The Ursuline Chapel is simply a commemoration of the religious order of the Ursulines and the art they brought with them to Quebec.

The Ursulines were a branch of nuns who arrived in what was then New France in 1639, and founded a convent which is still in operation today, the oldest in North America.

Today they are still active and in addition to the Chapel the Ursulines manage a small museum as well as the previously mentioned convent.

The remains of the French General Montcalm are also located here....After his death during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham his was initially brought here to be buried.

Statue of the Bishop Laval....

The Bishop Laval....is Canada's very first Bishop and lived from 1623 until 1708...during the beginnings of New France....Today there stands a statue of him in front of the Old Post Office, on the corner of rue du Fort and Côte de la Montagne.

The statue was unveiled in 1908, the 200th anniversary of the bishop's death.

He is recognized for his faith and his confidence in God during a life which he consecrated to the building of a dynamic and evangelic Christian community in what was then known as New France.

Archbishop Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau....

In 1886 Archbishop Elzéar Alexandre Taschereau became the first Canadian cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church....

He was born in Sainte Marie de la Beauce, Quebec, 17 February, 1820. His great-grandfather, Thomas Jacques Taschereau, emigrated from Touraine, France, and in 1746 was granted the seigniory of Sainte Marie de la Beauce.

Notre Dame de Quebec....

This is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec.

The history of this site goes back to 1633 when the first chapel was erected here in what was then New France...the first church built soon after in 1647...the structure was destroyed in the siege by the British in 1759,and the cathedral was rebuilt between 1768 and 1771.

That [new ] structure burned and was gutted by fire in 1922 and was again rebuilt in its present form between 1923 and 1925...

Notre Dame des Victoires

The Notre Dame des Victoires Church is located in the heart of Place Royale and was built in 1688...

This church was built to commemorates the French victories over the British....the original structure...like so many here was destroyed during the Battle for Quebec...and like so many buildings here....has been reconstructed ..

It was here, in the square outside of Notre Dame des Victoires that a "scene" from the movie "Catch me if you Can" was filmed. It was intended to portray a church in France where close by.just before his arrest, Frank William Abagnale, Jr was working at forging currency.

Notre Dame des Victoires Interior...

The Brézé....has been suspended from the ceiling of the Notre Dame des Victoires since it was removed from the vaults of the Notre Dame Basiica in 1955....

The Brézé is an ex-voto [type of offering]...a vessel that arrived in Quebec City in 1664 transporting the Carignan Regiment and the Marquis de Tracy.
