"Favorite Photos from the Kastors Collection" Masai Mara Game Reserve Travelogue by glabah

Masai Mara Game Reserve Travel Guide: 599 reviews and 1,627 photos

Dusty roads, open top vehicles, and everyone covered with dust. This is what safari is about these days.

All of the photos in this traveloge are from the Kastor family collection, three of whom were members of our 2008 team to Kenya.

Elephants don't seem to have much fear of traffic, or anything else for that matter. They may not be meat eaters, but they certainly are not at the bottom of the food chain either, and are quite capable of defending themselves against just about any predator except humans, and don't do too bad a job against hunters with guns either.

Despite the sparse trees, giraffe seem to be reasonably common in Masai Mara. Sometimes they would graze on things that were far lower to the ground than they were built for, but they seemed to do just fine at it anyway.

Half of our group passes the other half of our group. There is no way you would want 10 people in these vans due to visibility and access to the open roof in order to take decent photos. Therefore, we split into two groups - five people in each van.

You've seen these elephants before. They are in a few other photos in this collection. However, this is probably the best view we have of the baby elephant all the others were surrounding.

As stated in my Bring Telephoto Equipment tip, you certainly want to bring something that is really good at taking photos at a distance with a bit of motion. For comparison, take a look at my photo of these elephants taken without a telephoto lens.

The stereotype of Kenya is vast grasslands and dry country. There are some very lush areas of Africa. However, most of those have been converted to cultivation of crops. These vast dry grasslands at Masai Mara are still the home of wild animals, including elephants.

We past this lion in the evening, and by the next morning there was a dead and very well eaten wildebeest carcass near the same location. Soon after that, we saw more members of the pride: lionesses with a number of cubs.

She even roared for us as she called the rest of her pride to her to help hunt down some food. If only this photo had some sound to it!

Can a day be busy and relaxing at the same time? It sure seemed like that was the case on safari.

This is one place I really would like to visit. I agree about the telephoto lens - my suggestion for travellers is one of the 'superzoom' cameras now available from most manufacturers - typically around x20.

Nice page with good tips! Camera's don't like dust, have had that experience, and it wasn't good. I think my favorite photo is the one of all the hippo's in a row!

Thanks for your tips. We are just trying to decide which location to pick for our first trip to Africa.
