Cricket - A Passion of my youth.

by ranger49 - last update: Oct 26, 2008

Growing up next door to a cricket club

Vinoo Mankad 24/6/49
Cricket was my Dad's sport and by all accounts he was a very good all round player. I have wondered if he bought the house I grew up in because it was next door to one of the best local cricket clubs in Manchester and close to Lancashire's ground at Old Trafford.
As well as watching local games including several important benefit Matches held there Dad took me and my brother to watch matches at Old Trafford. And that was how I came to collect the autographs ofsome of the star cricketers of the late '40s

Cyril Washbrook Benefit Match June 6th 1948

I wrote the header for this 10 and a half years old at the time.

Some more great names from the past
Frankie Worrell
Cyril Washbrook
EA (Mannie) Martindale
Ken Grieves

R. Pollard's Benefit Match 4:1X:49

Dad wrote the header, note date written in Roman numerals.

Faded but in addition to C. Jefferson President of local club there are Malcolm Hilton and his younger brother Jim;
Dick Pollard;
Cyril Washbrook.
S. Smith ( need a Wisden's to identify)
and a name that I cannot read .

Undated and some more repeats

Charlie Hallows
R. (Dick) Berry
Dick Pollard
Jack Ingham (jounalist)
and two names I cannot read
