Origins of some words we use every day:

ELEPHANT PAINTING BY RICHARD (wearing BANGLES)
Interesting - I love words. I read a lot. And I always make a mental note of words that interest me. These are a few words that are used every day by English speaking people, and until a few years ago, I did not realise that they were "poached" from India.

This is a list of a few:

AVATAR - MEANS Incarnation
BANGLE - (from Bang), a type of bracelet
BANDANNA - (from Bandhna) (lucknavi) to tie a scarf aroud the head
BUNGALOW - a term for a type of Bengali house
COT - (from Khat) , a portable bed
CUMMERBUND - (from Kamar Bandh) meaning a waist band
CUSHY (from khushi) easy, happy , soft
JUNGLE - (from jangal) another word for wlderness or forest
KHAKI - dust colour
PYJAMA (from Payjamo) loose garment worn with trouser
PUNDIT (from Pandit) a learned scholar or priest
SENTRY (from Santri) an armed guard
SHAMPOO (from Champu) scalp massage with an oily mixture, before bath
THUG (from Thag) meaning thief
VERANDAH (open space around house) Hindi
