Beautiful Shropshire - Part II

by zweiblumen - last update: Oct 23, 2008

The Stiperstones

The base of Manstone Rock, Stiperstones
Steeped in legends of witchcraft and demons, the Stiperstones is one of the remotest parts of Shropshire, a windswept ridge with shattered quartzite tors.
Tree on the Stiperstones, Shropshire

Tree on the slopes of the Stiperstones

Gnarled and twisted trees cling to the sides of the Stiperstones.
Manstone Rock, Stiperstones summit

Manstone Rock

The Stiperstones is the 2nd highest hill in Shropshire, at 536 metres it's no giant but what it lacks in height it more than makes up for in atmosphere and sheer ruggedness.
Devil's Chair, Stiperstones

Devil's Chair

The largest of the tors on the Stiperstones (but not the highest point) where legend has it, the Devil himself sits on the longest night of the year and summons all the witches and evil spirits.
Corndon Hill from the Stiperstones

Corndon Hill

Not strictly in Shropshire ... or England for that matter as it lies just across the border in Wales in the county of Powys. Nevertheless, I have always regarded it as one of the Shropshire hills. A lonely and barren hill dotted with ancient cairns.
western flanks of the longmynd

The Longmynd

The view to the east from the Stiperstones is dominated by the long whaleback of the Longmynd.
Reservoir, New Pool Hollow, The Longmynd

New Pool Hollow

The Longmynd has many steep valleys, this north east facing valley contains a Victorian built reservoir.
Glider photographed from the Longmynd

Close encounter with a glider!

The Longmynd has a glider station on its southern edge, it has been in existence since 1934, a great place to watch these graceful and silent aircraft as they swoop and soar over the valleys.
