"Favorite Photos from David W.s Collection" Oyugis Travelogue by glabah

Oyugis Travel Guide: 4 reviews and 39 photos

These photos were not taken by me. Instead, they were taken by our group leader, David W., who not only took a number of interesting photos, but also gave is camera to some of the Kenyans we came to visit. Therefore, some of these photos really are a look at local life through the eyes of one of those who live here.

On the other hand, there are also obviously a number of photos where the Kenyan children reacted in a way they would only react if someone from outside their area were talking to them.

In the photo shown above, which was taken by one of the Kenyans who was using David's camera, David is showing some photos and videos on his laptop from his previous trip here. Thsi is a real treat for some of these people, as the nearest electricity is about 3 miles away and many of the people living in this district lack water or other basic necessities, let alone electricity, anywhere nearby.

Visiting the homes in the community were good, but also very emotional. Many of the people here lack quite a few of the things that many would regard as basic necessities. Even drinking water is quite some distance away.

People wear a variety of clothing. Some of these are very much African in origin, while others are very much European / American in origin, and others are an attractive combination between articles of clothing from various sources.

Most of the younger children didn't speak any English, and in fact their Swahili skills were limited too. That means using local translators.

Even so, simple tasks like keeping the lunch line and snack line in order was something we could help with.

Especially an experienced teacher like Anita!

This was our first look at the school were we were to be interacting with the children from the community.

Interesting pages Glen..Your experiences with the kids here must surely have made up for the hotel..speaking of which..sounds like a bit of an adventure in itself!
