Macedonia is a perfect country for hiking. It has many mountains and hills, and a lot of churches, monuments and scenic places to visit during the hikes.

Unfortunately, it is still hard to get information about the trails, and descriptions are hard to find, if they already exist.

More and more tracks for outdoor GPS devices become available, making it easier to find good hiking trails. I bought my first GPS device in 2011, a Garmin Dakota 20, and here you can find the tracks I did in Macedonia.

The website mkdmount.org used to have a lot of GPS tracks in addition to information about the mountains. Unfortunately they are offline. An overview including a map of their and other GPS tracks in Macedonia can be found at http://www.gpsies.com/.

The hikes that I have done are scattered over individual pages, tips and travelogues. On this page you will find all of them together.

WARNING: In August and September 2012 the Macedonian government proclaimed a ban to enter the forests in a desperate effort to prevent forest fires. Fines could go up to 3000 euro.
Sometimes it was possible, but very complicated, to get a permit to enter the forests. However, it was impossible to get a permit for e.g. Galicica National Park.
Keep this in mind when you want to go hiking in Macedonia in the future, since hiking may be made impossible again by the Macedonian authorities in case of the possibility of forest fires.
You may find more info on the website of the Macedonian Forest authority :http://www.mkdsumi.com.mk/

We are going to hike in Macedonia in the middle of May. We are going to hike in ?ipkovica (Tetovo), Mavrovo, Lake Matka, Galichica, Pelister. We are amateurs and we will go for easy-moderate hikes. For what kind of weather should we prepare? How cold is up there?

      Hi Max,

I usually hike in the summer in MK so I cannot tell you the weather in May but there are plenty of weather websites that will give you average temperatures. I'm also an amateur and usually only do day-hikes. Based on where you are going, I can recommend the hike from Mount Vodno to Lake Matka (try to find a route that also visits the Monastery of St Nikola at Lake Matka, the trail I did does not go there), Magaro Peak and the hike Elshani-Konsjko in Galicica. In Pelister, you can walk from Hotel Molika in Bitola to the mountain hut at the big glacial lake. You can stay in the hut but make sure it's open! From there you can walk back to Bitola or continue to Brajcino at Lake Prespa (the last one is still on my wishlist..). Near Galicica I also recommend the hike from Vevcani to Lake Lokva. Happy hiking! Dennis
