| Page Views: 323 | After 40 year absence, sisters re-unite by Homanded - last update: Aug 17, 2008 |
Mom, on the left, turned 80yo. Her sister is only 7 years older. They had not seen one another in over 40 years.
Looking at her, I see the similarities and wonder if my own mom might look like this had they not fled communist Cuba in the 60's. |
| | Bittersweet reunion My aunts children (my cousins) left Cuba 10 years ago and immigrated to the US. They passed their home down to their mother who had a house of her own.
According to goverment rule, cubans are not allowed to own their own home, simply inhabit the home they've lived in until death. Selling, giving or trading homes is strictly forbidden as it (the home and all it's belongings) belongs to the Cuban goverment.
My aunt, having a home of her own when my cousins left, sought to make a better living by renting out my cousins home to tourists visiting the island and affording her a way to feed her daughter and two grandchildren.
After months of investigation, the goverment, 3 months ago, took BOTH her houses away and have turned her out unto the streets! She's a sick 87yo homeless woman living between homes and the generosity of friends. |
