Forgotten Countries - Can you name these places?

by trvlrtom - last update: Aug 30, 2008

This is a challenge to all VT members. Shown are stamps from countries that no longer exist. At least, they no longer exist as political entities that have their own post offices and stamps. The places may have been taken over by another, or they may have been colonies that changed names after gaining independence, or they may have broken away politically for some time. But for whatever reason, if you go there today and mail a postcard home, your stamp will have a different country on it.

Let me know if you think you can identify all eight. The first to do so will gain worldwide recognition on VT!

The type of boat in the first picture may give you a hint of the region this comes from.

Answer - Aden, located on the sw coast of the Arabian pennisnula, was a British colony and protectorate. In 1963 the Federation of South Arabia was formed. A few years later it became Yemen.

#2

You may recognize the two figures depicted on this stamp. Do you know what the current name of the place is?

Answer - This territory in southern Africa was transferred to Great Britain in 1883. The colony of Basutoland gained independence in 1966 and is now called Lesotho.

#3

This stamp is from the 1930s. If you landed an airplane to this place today, what country would you be in?

Cyrenaica was an Italian colony in northern Africa. In 1951 it was incorporated into Libya.

# 4

Another airplane, this one leaving from a place that now is a part of another country.

Answer - Danzig (Gdansk in Polish) was established as a free city following World War One from German territory. It was seized by Germany in 1939 and became a Polish province after the Second World War.

# 5

No plane here - but a double headed eagle on a field of white and blue. Here's is a hint: if now you were where this stamp was issued, you would see a national flag of white and blue.

Answer - This land was once a part of Turkey and is now divided between Greece and Albania. Part of this area, now a part of Albania, set up a provisional government during 1912-13 but it collapsed in 1916 when the Greeks occupied it.

# 6

Don't think this is from Spain. Fernando Poo is a different place.

Answer - Fernando Poo is an island in the Gulf of Guinea off west Africa. It was administered by Spain. In 1963 it was united with the Spanish territory of Rio Muni to form the Republic of Equatorial Guinea.

# 7

The Gilbert & Ellice Islands are now separate entities and have different names. Do you know them?

answer - This is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean northeast of Australia. They were annexed by Great Britain in 1892. The colony later was divided and now there are two countries: Tuvalu and Kiribati.

# 8

Unless you are really a map expert, this one will be difficult to identify. The region shown is now a small part of another country.

Answer - Hatay was a semi-autonomous district of Syria under French mandate following World War One, from territory that was Turkey (Ottoman Empire). It was re-named Hatay in 1938 and transfered to Turkey in 1939 after a vote of the people.

No, I didn't get to carve a pumpkin this year! I was out of town for Halloween (in South Bend). How about you?
