It was acceptable in the 80s...

by JessH - last update: May 25, 2009

Dancing with myself, uh-uh-uh dancing with myself

Yes, that's a Fido Dido sweater (1988)
I absolutely LOVE the 80s, and I miss them every single day. In the good old days, you could wear pretty much (or as little) as you cared for, the music was optimistic, materialism wasn't frowned upon, and there was no such thing as a bad hair day!

This is a list of memories I have been collecting for the past few months; all things great about "the decade that good taste forgot"... Care to share your favourite memories? I will add there here.

--> ARE YOU A TRUE CHILD OF THE 80s? <--

MTV actually played music videos in the 80's. You remember MTV's original spaceman.

There was only one kind of Nike tennis shoe (white with red swoosh), and it didn't cost $125.

Playing video games actually meant going OUT and meeting friends.

When you were out partying, you didn't have to worry about Mum calling on your cell phone.

We didn't have to worry about getting our heads blown off at school - unless you put a whole pack of Pop Rocks in your mouth & drank a coke.

Feathered hair or solid hair-spray-waves were so much easier to care for than a sleek, straightened look.

You didn't have to worry about your pants falling down all the time. They were so tight we couldn't get them off! This also kept teenage pregnancies at an all-time low!

You never questioned why the A-Team were always imprisoned in places that had sufficient tools to build an armoured tank.

Hot pink, electric blue and banana yellow have featured in your wardrobe or make-up collection. Not only did you wear luminous clothing, but also mismatched fingerless gloves and towelling socks.

Girls, you had a major crush on either Face from the A Team, MacGyver or Magnum PI (Hawaiian shirts and tight white shorts... hmmm!).
Guys, you had a crush on either Farrah Fawcett, Brooke Shields or Suzanne Somers.

You remember when the A-Ha video was the pinnacle of modern technology, and you can still sing all the words.

You think that nothing beats the original "Die Hard" movies, and Bruce Willis looks wrong wearing anything but a dirty wife-beater vest.

To this day, you dance the same way to all 80s songs (unless you actually know the dance moves from the music video... now *that's* even better!): hands up, elbows pointing downwards, arms parallel to each other, and then shift weight from one leg onto the other whilst pushing alternative elbows forward. Intermediate: snap your fingers to the beat. There, you're dancing the 80s shuffle!

You ever owned a thin, black leather tie or worse; it was patterned like a piano.

You rolled the sleeves of your suit jacket up.

You can remember what Michael Jackson looked like before his nose fell off.
Where's the Disco Inferno? (1983)

***

You know where to go if you "wanna go where everybody knows your name."

You knew "The Artist / The Symbol" when he was humbly called "Prince."

You know all the words to "Ice Ice Baby".
You also remember how to dance to "Can't touch this".

You carried your lunch to school in a Gremlins or an ET lunchbox.
You also had a matching thermos bottle, usually containing warm Nesquik milk.

You wore biker shorts underneath a short skirt (preferably denim) and felt stylish.

You had a Swatch Watch.
You had to turn your wrist over to look at your watch.

You had WonderWoman or Superman bed sheets.

You Believed that "by the power of Greyskull, you HAD the power!"

Partying "like it's 1999" seemed sooo far away.

You remember when a singer having only one big hit was normal.

Ladies, with every promotion in your job, your shoulder pads grew larger.

Guys, you wore a shiny grey suit with black shoes... and no socks.

You owned a jumper or t-shirt with Fido Dido on it... and were thrilled when 7Up brought him back in the early 2000s! (ehem, guilty on both charges...)

You were just as pleased when a couple of years later, Converse made their comeback!

You ever laid awake at night in a vain attempt to..."9, 10, never sleep again..."

You know *why* you should never feed them after midnight...

You wrote WHAM, KISS, ACDC etc. on your shoes with black permanent marker.
Glo-Worm from www.stufffromthe80s.com

* * *

You owned a talking Alf Doll (well, actually it was an Alf backpack... "Har Har! No Problemo!")

Your ponytail was on the side of your head and you thought you were "hip". You know that the higher the pony-tail the cooler it is.

You collected monster in my pocket figurines.

You remember when McDonald's burgers came in Styrofoam boxes.

You wish every day off could be just like Ferris Bueller's.

You wore ankle socks with high heels, and looking back now: they were great: prevented blisters on the dancefloor!

You had to "fight for your right to parrrrrty!"

You saw the "Money for Nothing" music video and thought it was mind-blowing.

You had a favourite Ghostbuster (mine was Bill Murray!)

You could stay home from school and watch of The Muppet Show.

You remember when the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls were way cooler than some stupid Tamagotchi (should I mention at this point that I still have my Cabbage Patch Kid?)

You walked like an Egyptian.

Girls, you had a crush on Kirk Cameron.

We all wanted a dad just like Dr Huxtable in The Cosby Show.

You sang along to the Ninja Turtles theme song.

You also sang along to the theme tune of 21 Jump Street.

In summer (girls) you wore a t-shirt and tied a knot into the front.
My speak & spell (I finally threw it away in 2004)

* * *

You know the Mr Men books and you have a favourite Mr Man or Little Miss.

You tied a bandana around your thigh because that was what they did in "cool bands".

You've worn at least one article of clothing backwards (not counting hats).

You wore overalls with one strap unbuckled and hanging down over your back ("Come on Eileen!")

You remember the Pizza Hut commercials with generous mountains of stretchy cheese!

You wore a necklace on top of your turtleneck sweater (ewwww... not a good look...)

You remember thinking you were cool if you wore your schoolbag on only one shoulder.

You remember getting up early on a weekend to watch Danger Mouse and Hong Kong Phooey.
You remember when it was actually worth getting up early on a Saturday to watch cartoons.

You remember the mannequin movie where she comes alive at night in the department store ("And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever, nothing’s gonna stop us noooow!")

You can sing the Never Ending Story theme song.

You owned an Etch-A-Sketch or a Magnadoodle Board (I had both!)

You couldn't fall asleep without your Glo-Worm (I loved my Glo-Worm!)

You remember the Flintstones Kids, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, and Tom and Jerry Kids
You wonder why the Jetsons never had a kid version of the show.

You wanted the recipe for Gummi Bear Juice (boing, boing boing...)
Why were we all forced to wear sandals!? (1985)

* * *

You remember being rich because your parents owned TWO cars!

You looked forward to hot summer afternoons so you could invite your friends over to have fun by sliding down a hill in your garden on the plastic-slide with the small water spouts on either side (I loved that thing!)

You loved watching "Family Feud" and "The Price is Right".

You remember turning the KNOB to change TV channels.

You wore leg warmers (mine were white and pink) and felt like you're in Flash Dance.

You roller skated everywhere and said "Go go Gadget skates!"

You started taking dirty dancing lessons after watching Patrick Swayze, and you had "the time of your life!"

You can remember when there was only one flavour of Gatorade.

Looking back now, your biggest regret is the realization that unless you're a size zero, acid-wash high-waisted tube jeans will *always* make your bum look big.

You remember when "floppy discs" really were floppy.

You accept the 60s and the 70s as retro, but come up with at least a dozen arguments why the 80s were "only a few years ago".
