A wonderful cruise

by Aitana - last update: Apr 16, 2009

The cruise ship anchored in front of Santorini.
Rodos. At the bottom, the Turkish coast.

Greek islands

The cruise started at Civitavecchia. After two days on board, we finally arrived to Mykonos in a stormy afternoon.

Rodos was the next stop. Fortunately, the weather was better that day and we could enjoy a visit to the walled town.

The third island we visited was Santorini. Afterwards, we passed the Hellespont and then, we arrived to the Bosphorus.

Istanbul

The cruise stoped two days at Istanbul. The first day we saw many people around the Blue Mosque. There was a festival at the Hippodrome: lots of families were celebrating the end of Ramadan. Our time in the city was short, but we saw the biggest mosques (Sultan Ahmet, Yeni, Suleiman), Agia Sofia, the Cistern, Topkapi palace and the bazaars.

Constanta

We left the Bosphorus and went into the Ponto Euxino (Black Sea). The lack of activity at the huge port of Constanta was a prelude to what we would find later in the city. What a contrast with the crowded streets in Istanbul!

Constanta has seen better times, as the Casino and other buildings nearby showed.

Odessa

Odessa has also lived better times, but both the port and the city are more active. The touch of French urban planners make the city very pleasant.

This was the furthest stopover in our cruise. Then, we crossed again the Black Sea, the Bosphorus, the Hellespont...
Potemkin Stairs
Library of Celsus

Ephesus

... and came back to the Aegean Sea. Next destination: Kusadasi. The town had not much to offer us, so we went to Ephesus, where we visited the ruins of the hellenistic city: The Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, the Theatre, the Temple of Domitian...

We had lunch in a nice village, Sirince, that still preserves its Orthodox church.

Athens

Next stopover: Piraeus. Obliged visit: Athens. First, Acropolis: Parthenon, Erecteion, Museum... then, Agora, Stoa, Theseion... Then, souvlaki at Mitropoleos, relax at the National Garden... short time, my beloved Athens!

The tram took us to Phaleron from where we walked to the great port of Piraeus, passing along Turkolimano and Pasalimani.
The Theseion

Pompeii

From Naples, the last stopover, we took a train and after a short trip we were in Pompeii.
This place deserves a long and calm visit. It is all a city to discover! The ashes preserved many villas with precious frescoes.

Afterwards, a walk around Naples was the end to a unforgettable travel.

Thank you for travelling to Ely and the Lakes with me. If you find the time, do write more about your travels, I enjoy reading about them. But I know how difficult it is to find the time.
