Impressions of the Middle Rhine Valley

by tremendopunto - last update: Nov 8, 2008

Burg Rheinstein

Burg Rheinstein dominates the Rhine Valley
On this part of the Rhine - the Middle Rhine Valley (between Cologne and Mainz, most famous maybe the part between Koblenz and Bingen) - you can enjoy a river cruise for a daytrip and watch 20 magnificent castles passing by on just a few kilometers (on this 60km stretch of the Middle Rhine Valley that the UNESCO declared to its heritage site, there are more than 40 castles and palaces) - the highest density of castles in the world. Nowhere else can you find so many castles on one spot. A stop is possible in nearly every town along the route, so you can discover the romantic old towns where time stands still, do some winetasting the region is famous for or hike up the hills/vineyards and take a tour to discover the way of the life of knights and noblemen (or robber barons) in their castles in medieval times. Some are well preserved, some are hotels today, others lie in ruins - enjoy a cup of coffee or wine&dine while watching down on the River Rhine panorama, before you go on to see the next highlights.
Come along and take a view at the Castles along the Rhine.
Burg Katz with a beautiful view over the Rhine

Burg Katz

This magnificent landscape with its history easily fascinated and inspired painters, poets and musicians like Wiliam Turner, Heinrich Heine, Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Kleist, von Fallerleben and Robert Schumann and many, many more....which was the foundation to the so called "Rheinromantik" - Rhine Romanticism.
Every place offers an interesting history and some famous legends like the Loreley or the Dragon Mountain where Siegfried once killed a dragon.....maybe you get lucky and you discover the hidden Rhinegold ;-)
There is an extended video of the Castles along the Rhine here on VT.

Palace Drachenburg

Follow the footsteps of people like Lord Byron, Victor Hugo or Brentano along the Middle Rhine Valley - an UNESCO World heritage site.
