| Not authentic, but pretty. |
Stratford is well-endowed with Tudor 'black and white' houses (actually, many of them date from after 1601, when the Tudor dynasty ended). The correct colours should be cream plasterwork and natural wood; some of the more recently restored buildings are now like that. But many of the black and white ones remain. It was a (much) later fashion to paint them thus, and they are quite attractive.
It's worth looking at the buildings off the main streets as well as those which are open to the public (some Shakespearean connection, of course). |
