Patsy & the Animal Tracks tour

by aussirose - last update: Jun 17, 2008

Zig, Bob & Patsy fire starting
This was a real hilight of our big outback trip...meeting another one of Zig's lovely Aboriginal relatives.

Patsy is a gem....and so funny!! :o) Zig told us before we got there that Patsy can be a bit shy and will only say something on the tour if she feels comfortable. Well she must have felt right at home with us....and who wouldn't haha....the great vt mob we are ;o)

It all started when the Animal Tracks guide Rachael picked us up in the bus and we made our way to Patsy's farm....btw it is a buffalo farm. Rachael told us that Animal Tracks approached Patsy to come on board as they knew that she was an extremely knowledgeable local as far as bush tucker is concerned. Patsy lives with her husband who provides fresh buffalo meat to the local Aboriginal community....straight to the door....lucky them :o)
Cooking Bush tucker Animal Tracks Tour 2008

Bush Tucker yea!!

This is the end result of our tour of Patsy's farm and collecting bush tucker.....a campfire complete with buffalo meat, barramundi, damper, grub, bush yams & billy tea.

But before we get to that, the following are a few things we did and learnt....
Patsy & Pandanas Bush Tucker
Pandanas Trees....very good Bush Tucker!!

Pandanas trees are everywhere up in the tropics and usefull for all sorts of things including basket weaving and tucker.

Along the way Patsy collected a few long leaves to continue her basket weaving and also gave us a taste of the inside of the top of the trunk....tasted between sugar cane & coconut.....mmmm nice & sweet.
Eating grub bush tucker Animal Tracks Tour 2008
Yea, you guessed it...grub!!

Patsy showed us what to look for when finding grubs in a tree.....just look for shavings at the bottom of the tree she said.....and proceeded to chop into it. Minutes later....this is what she found.

Errr!!....not eating that I said!....but guess what?.......I did!! ....cooked of course.....and when I bit into it and after the initial shock of feeling the grub squirt out of it's cooked shell.....chewing....well it tasted sort of like Pistacio nuts. Well not my favourite nut....but hey...you've gotta experience it....once at least :o)
Eating Ants Animal Tracks Tour 2008
Who'd ever thought that eating green tree ants would cure headaches?!!

Check them out!!.....Errr!...they were still wriggling!! lol.

Patsy asked Rachael to stop the bus when she saw a little nest and proceeded to pull it off and bang bang! smashed it in the palms of her hands to a pulp! .....then got all of us to taste a bit.

Can you believe it!!.....here's a bus load of people....eating green tree ants!!......well I tell you we all loved it! True!! ....They tasted very lemony...actually very nice.
Patsy Basket Weaving Animal Tracks Tour 2008

Basket Weaving

Patsy is an awesome basket weaver!!

Guess it just comes naturally. Anyway by this time, as the tucker is cooking, Patsy still had us in fits of laughter with her stories as well as showing us the last few rows of this basket she was making for someone special. She tells us that she has orders a mile long and can't find the time to fit everything in....no wonder!! ...this lady one amazing charactor and all I can say is lucky Rachael & Zig for knowing someone very special!! :o)

Thank you Patsy & Rachael for a wonderful experience!!

Yep. I just wish more folk would heed the croc warnings and not blame the crocodiles when they get eaten!
