River Crossings

by aussirose - last update: Jul 8, 2008

Darwin Survivor outback trip 2008
Call them river crossings or washouts....the meaning's the same. We went through so many of these things that it's probably true to say we all got washinged out by the end of the trip ;o)

How did we know this?....because after a while Zig said....want to get out to take some pix?.....and we said....no thanks ;o)

1st crossing we came to was on the border of Kakadu & Arnhem Land called Cahills Crossing.

Cahills Crossing is also the home of a few huge crocs so we needed to keep a watch at all times.

The water is fast flowing and I wouldn't attempt to cross unless I was in a 4 wheel drive. This car thought so too, and reversed and turned back.

Since Cahills crossing is on the border of Arnhem Land, every Tom, Dick & Harry wants to go there. However you need a permit to travel into this place as it is Aboriginal owned territory. Big fines are given out for not heeding this rule.

As you can see, this is quite a common practice.....see the same car going back over the crossing.....just to say that "they've been into Arnhem Land" !!

Zig told us that occasionally the cops hide around the corner on the other side and nab these clowns!!.....works well especially when they're down on their point quota for the month :o)

A common technique for experienced washout crossers is to wade through the water a bit first to see if it is ok to cross.

No....this is not what Gillian & Zig are doing.....they just wanted to take some good pix!!......true little vt'ers in action ;o)

And of course Zig is walking backwards to check on the croc situation.....Gillian found out about that one later hehee :o)

This was one of the prettiest river crossings.

We stopped here for a while to take pix & admire the nice view.

Not so much a crossing but definately a washout!!

We must have travelled on this stetch of dirt track....or water track....for about 2k's on our way to Mt Borridale.

You can't keep the VA's down....they just had to get in on the act!

Must have taken me 10minutes of my valuable happy snappin' time to photo shoot all of them admiring the river crossing :o)

Yep. I just wish more folk would heed the croc warnings and not blame the crocodiles when they get eaten!
