It is well worth the couple of euros entrance to access the crypt.
It's a particularly big one (the largest in the world, apparently), and contains many points of interest.
It is, of course, the oldest part of the cathedral and the red and white banding of the stone is more obvious here despite the lack of light.
The crypt was (and is) a place of worship:there are seven altars, and an early Medieval baptismal font. It leads to the 'gruft', the burial place of kings and emperors, whose stone coffins with their chiselled decoratioon still lie where they were originally placed. |
