About Myself

by Rupanworld - last update: Jun 5, 2008

I was born and have spent my childhood in the mountains of the North Eastern India amidst the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. I have also spent time in the valleys of this region. I have beautiful memories of mountain terraces, tall trees, clouds under the feet, zig zag roads, small houses, tribal dances, bon fires and lots of snakes. My school was on the top of a hill and I loved going to school because my mother packed nice lunch for me in the lunchbox. I am very nostalgic about all these memories, but I fear that if I visit the places again, those beautiful memories stored in my young innocent eyes may be lost. So may be I never visit the state of Mizoram again in life, unless I come out of this fear
At the age of 22, I came to Kolkata for studies and settled there. I got married in January 2005.

Just today, I was having a discussion with a new colleague from Columbia and there was a reference to my daughter. She was surprised that I have a daughter and promptly asked, "Oh! You have a daughter! Are you married?" I said "Yes, of course. In India it is very important to be married before you have a child." And I am proud of that tradition.

When in India, I was always complaining at so many things, but my life in Europe has made me fall in love with the cultural values, traditions and people from India. I now know that Indians have the biggest heart amongst all people in the world.
The greatest love of my love is my daughter Urja. That's what we call her. But she has another name, Tannistha, which means self-determination.

She was born on 4th October 2006 at Kolkata, India. I am lucky to have a sweet little angel like her. I would try my best to give her the best she deserves. One thing is for sure, whatever I do I do it for her. I wish she becomes a singer or a painter or a player someday (all of which I wanted to become someday) or atleast somebody that others would take inspiration from. The fact that I am miles away from my daughter and my husband, definitely makes me very sad. But I keep counting the days till I meet them again (in July 2008).
I like to be mischieveous at times (and my profile photo will tell you that, Big horns...). I love cooking, and enjoy eating Indian (Moghlai and Tandoori) and Chinese dishes. I experiment a lot with cooking. See the photo for proof. Things I am afraid of are dogs, snakes, height and suffocation. Things that make me jealous are good memory, good eyesight and ability to take beautiful photographs. My greatest regret is that I could not learn to play the Violin or the Mouth organ. My hobbies are stamps and coins collection and that's what I bring home as souvenirs from all places I visit. I love painting too. I do also have an expensive hobby and that is Ethnic Barbie coleection.
I love playing a lot of stupid indoor games and watching lots of outdoor games. Cricket and athletics are my favourite.

I also love watching people swim but can't swim myself. I always thought that there will be lots of snakes in water, so never dared to learn swimming (remember I come from a land of snakes). My husband, parents and parents-in-law are all great swimmers and laugh at me. But I have promised to learn swimming when my daughter has her first swimming lessons. I hope my weight does not prevent me from doing so. I already have a long list of people who want to teach us me and my daughter) swimming when we are ready for that.
I love to do a lot of window shopping, as we popularly call it in India.

I love watching Bollywood movies.

I also love to do all those things that helps you become fatter. For example, I love eating lots of chocolates, ice-creams, spicy and oily food. I love sitting and watching the TV. I hate walking and always prefer to take a taxi even for the minimum distances. I love sleeping. However, travelling is perhaps the only thing I enjoy that does not make me more fat. But ofcourse, it makes me fat with memories. I keep on telling myself all the time that "I am on diet", although the truth is that I never am.
Some other things I enjoy are sketching, stiching and getting tensed at every small thing.

I envy people who are good photographers or play some musical instrument well. I always wanted to be perfect in those, but I am nowhere even close to.

I dream of travelling a lot, may be to all countries of the world someday. Unfortunately my husband does not enjoy travelling a lot as I do. He would rather sit at home and read a book.

I am a conservative person, very superstitious at times but at the same time, I am also a person who can adjust to any situation in life, however difficult and unagreeable. I don't generally believe in God, but pray to him when in trouble. That, I know, is hypocrisy, but can't really change that, nor that I want to.

And yes, another thing, the last information about myself. By profession, I am a Corporate Lawyer and I hate my job. I would prefer something more creative. If I had a choice now, I would rather compose and direct plays, or be a Kids' fashion designer.
