Spacey Facts about Shuttles....

by jadedmuse - last update: Jun 15, 2008

The plume of jet fuel exhaust left after blast-off
People gathered beachside to watch the launch

Shuttles achieve an orbital speed of 17,400 mph

The sun will rise and set on the Discovery Shuttle every 45 minutes while in Space
Far left, Cape Canaveral; blast-off
Shuttle a few seconds after blast-off

Astronauts return to earth anywhere from 1 to 2 inches TALLER after spending time in Space

When space shuttles return to earth, the shuttle breaks the sound barrier as it crashes through the earth's atmosphere. The sonic boom is enough to rattle windows and startle a person (when it happens in early morning, it is enough to wake up a sleeping body. I know - it's happened to me every time!)
Shuttle continuing its upward trajectory
...and continuing its trajectory...

The space shuttle approaches the runway at an angle of approximately 20 degrees – about 7 times steeper than a commercial airliner coming in for a landing. Touchdown speed clocks in at about 250 miles an hour – more than 100 m.p.h. faster than an airliner.

In your backyard now. Posted updates to my Melbourne,FL page. Found Bunky's improved since my last visit so all is fine. I trust Gabby is growing and prospering. All the best.

Thanks for dropping by Michele! :-) I've been slacking a bit recently where VT is concerned (2 months since I last logged on!), but I've got a renewed enthusiasm for adding to my pages! :-) Hope you are keeping well and enjoying your travels! :-)
